Lofstofan Baptistakirkja
Loftstofan Baptistakirkja was launched in August of 2013 by a small group of Icelanders who wanted to be a part of a larger vision and goal for the country. They hoped to not only be a part of a starting a church, but were prayerfully seeking to be a catalyst for a church planting movement in Iceland where Christ-exalting, Bible-Believing, Disciple-Making, Gospel-Preaching, healthy and multiplying churches would be planted in Iceland to reach the people living here.
From that moment on Jesus has been building his church, around 3 or 4 years into it Gunnar was able to become fully funded as the pastor of Loftstofan Baptistakirkja, and our hope is that God would simply keep growing his church, not only int he numbers of people gathering together on Sundays, but also in how many people go out from us to start other churches and reach more people. |
The aim of Loftstofan is that found in Ephesians 3:21: that God would be glorified in and through his church. So we exist to glorify God, and to enjoy Him forever. We do that by:
Growing Upward - In our love, knowledge and worship of God.
Growing Inward - Into the community of believers that God has called together by His Holy Spirit.
Growing Outward - To raise up followers of Jesus to love Jesus and love like Jesus in their daily lives, to “go” and make disciples.”

Gunnar Ingi is married to Svava María Ómarsdóttir. Together they have 4 beautiful children. Gunnar set out to start and pastor Loftstofan Baptistakirkja in 2013. Gunnar grew up in church, went to a Bible Training Program in Alabama for 3 years, and served as a Youth Pastor at his previous church before actually coming to faith in 2010. He was working at a grocery store and listening to sermons. They hammered away at our need for the grace, mercy and the love of Jesus Christ who made a way for us to be justified before God on the cross. Quickly following his conversion Gunnar had a growing passion to start a church and see other healthy, gospel-centered, disciple-making, Bible-preaching, Jesus-loving and multiplying churches started in Iceland. |

Elliot Jones
Elder / College Leader
Loftstofan / Ex Deus College Ministry
We exist to know God, to Worship God, and to make disciples. To that end, Ex Deus holds a weekly Tuesday night fellowship and game night, called Club, and holds various social outreach gatherings throughout the week. The intent is to create a compelling Christian community on campus that allows for the members of Ex Deus and students on campus to have deep, on-going relationships. |
Elliot A. Jones is married to Hildur Snjólaug Bruun Garðarsdóttir Jones (Icelander). He was born in Portland, Oregon (USA) and grew up in Africa, returning to the States for his teenage years. He came to faith at the age of 14 and immediately began to feel a pull to serve in ministry overseas. He attended the University of Oregon and received a BA in History in 2017. He also served in his church in Eugene as a bible study leader within the college ministry as well as running the set-up and tear-down ministry.
In August of 2018 Elliot moved to Iceland to attend the University studying Medieval History, and has served at Loftstofan Baptistakirkja in a variety of capacities, namely, on the worship team, heading up the college ministry (Ex Deus), a deacon, and finally, in April 2020, he was voted in as an Elder to serve alongside Gunnar Ingi Gunnarsson. |
Elliot’s wife, Hildur, came to faith at the age of 23, in the summer of 2018. Today she works as Gunnar's assistant, serves in the college ministry Ex-Deus and is currently undergoing treatment for a brain tumor.
